Do you have an old faux greenery wreath that is faded and sparse? Follow my DIY instructions and learn how I recycle mine into a beautiful Christmas wreath.

DIY Christmas Wreath

Last year I created this method for making a Christmas wreath when I couldn’t find my glue gun or paddle wire. We had moved recently, and they were packed away somewhere! However, I did find several old artificial wreaths from years gone by. They were ready for the landfill, but I had another idea for them.

Out of necessity, I took one of the sad sun-faded wreaths and bulked it up with foliage from my garden. No glue guns required!

This method prevented a trip to the landfill and produced a new wreath that looked lovely. No one knew it was a fake wreath underneath the garden greenery.

How to Recycle an Old Faded Wreath

  • Step 1: Using sharp clippers, collect snips from fresh evergreens. I used what I found on our wooded property. You can also score free branches from the tree farms and Christmas tree lots.
  • Step 2: Gather foliage that might add some color. I have Nandina bushes along the driveway that display beautiful red foliage in the fall. I also grabbed some holly branches with red berries.
  • Step 3: Open up or ‘fluff’ your artificial wreath even if it looks sparse. It won’t for long!

  • Step 4: Take one of your evergreen clippings and lay it on the wreath in the same direction as the artificial branches.
  • Step 5: Grasp one of the wired artificial branches and wrap it securely around the base of the fresh greenery..

  • Step 6: Continue all the way around until the wreath is full and looking alive.

  • Step 7: Using the same method, secure the vibrant foliage into the wreath until you achieve the look you want.
  • Step 8: Add a bow and you are ready to hang your beautiful DIY Recycled Christmas Wreath!

If you look closely, you can see the faded wreath under the fresh evergreen clippings!

This particular wreath ended up on my chicken coop and looked absolutely adorable!
